Verb

Verbs- :

Verbs are the action words. Types:

Action verbs, linking verb, helping verb, sensory verbs, causative verbs etc.

Action Verbs: These verbs tells what action, often a physical action, subject is performing, performed or will perform.

e.g. Turn at the next corner, Rajan.

Helping verbs: It assists the main verb in the sentence. There can be more than one helping verb in the sentence. The common helping verbs are is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being, has, had, have, do ,does, die, may, might, must, can, could, shall, should, will, would etc.

e.g. The members are going to the village.

              Here 'going' acts main verb.

              And 'are' as helping verb.

Linking verbs: These verbs connects (or links) a subject to a noun or an adjective in the predicate. The most common linking verb are forms of ‘be’ and appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain seem, smell, sound, stay, taste etc.

eg. The pianist plays very well.

Sensory verbs: verbs giving sense.

Felts by sense organs. eg observe, view, behold, her, feel, smell, see etc.

For complete action ® use v1 (use for short action also)

For incomplete action  ® use v4

e.g.        I felt the building shake.

       I notice her wink at me (not winking).

       The doctor felt my pulse running.

       I saw a thief go into your house.(not going)

Causative verbs: These are the verbs where one person makes another person do something for him and vice versa. Common causative verbs are have, get, make, let (allow, permit), help etc.

(They can be used on any term).

For person; get 0 + 0 + v1

For things; v3

eg:  I have my shoes  polished.

                    v3 for things

       I will get you to do my homework

                (to+v1) for person

       have as v1; eg: she had me write a letter.

   Help can be followed by both (to + v1) and v1.

e.g. I helped my father repair/to repair his car.

       Allow and permit is followed by (to  + v1)

   Let and make take v1 e.g

       She made me wash the clothes

       He let me use his computer.

       Note: The teacher is having the students write an essay.
