Chlorides And Nitrates

Chlorides:

Preparation:

  • Directly from metals and action of on metals.

  • Action of on metal oxide, hydroxide and carbonate.

  • By precipitation of insoluble chlorides

Properties:

  • Solubility:

-Most chlorides are soluble except , and

-(But is soluble in hot water

  • Action of heat:

-They are mostly thermally stable.

-Certain chlorides may sublimate on heating. Eg:

Nitrates:

Preparation:

  • By action of on metal, metal oxide, metal carbonate etc.

Properties:

  • Solubility:

-All metal nitrates are soluble except which is insoluble.

  • Action of Heat:

-Alkali metal nitrates are decomposed as follows:

(Except )

However, except above decomposition, all other decomposes as;
